It won’t be long before neighborhoods across Wilson County will be aglow with grinning jack-o’-lanterns, and the possibilities for your next carving project are only limited by your imagination. Of course, there are some handy do’s and don’ts to make everything go smoothly, so check out these pumpkin carving tips.

Bumps and All

Whether you’re browsing the farmer’s market, grocery store, or pumpkin patch, you’re likely going to encounter a few gourds with odd shapes or bumpy textures. Don’t pass those by just yet, though. While large cuts and moldy spots should definitely be avoided, unique shapes and features can help you make your jack-o’-lantern stand out from the rest.

The Right Tools

You might have seen pricey carving kits appear in stores this time of year, but you don’t have to spring for an expensive set of tools. A lower-priced kit should do the job just fine, and there’s nothing wrong with using the tools you already have in your kitchen. You can use a lemon zester to cut unique textures into the surface, and a melon baller is the perfect instrument for scooping out pulp and lining.

Flip It

Although the typical jack-o’-lantern sports a hole in the top so that you can remove its lid by the stem, experts suggest cutting a hole in the bottom to make removing the pulp easier. A good portion of the gourd’s insides will come out attached to the bottom, allowing you to avoid some reaching and scooping. You can still carve another hole up top, of course, which will let you easily place a candle inside. Don’t stop scooping out the insides once the pulp and seeds are gone. You can make carving your design much easier if you cut away at the interior walls until they’re only about an inch thick.
