Now that the holidays have come and gone, you might have some clutter to clean up at home. Try these tips to make that post-holiday cleanup easier.

Think Before You Repack

When the holidays are over, it might be tempting to just pack away all your decorations and get them out of the way as soon as possible. However, packing up is a great opportunity to make next year’s decorating much easier. Before to put all your decorations back into storage, take stock of what you used this year, and what you might not need again. If your string lights have too many burnt bulbs, it might be time to replace them. If you found that you didn’t use all your decorations, consider donating the excess to share the holiday cheer next year.

Clean the Kitchen

If you hosted holiday gatherings in your home, then your kitchen likely saw a lot of activity before dinner was served. Cooking for the holidays can be a demanding production, and all those spills, splashes, and other spots that you would normally address right away might have been overlooked when you needed to get everything ready on time. Now that things have cooled down, take the time to scrub down your surfaces and appliances to make them shine again. Leftovers don’t last forever, so go through your fridge to see if there’s anything that should be tossed out before it’s forgotten in the back.

Sort and Recycle

From live Christmas trees to food scraps, packaging, and wrapping paper, we tend to crate a lot of trash around the holidays. In fact, Stanford says that we throw out up to 25 percent more garbage between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. fortunately, not all this waste is bound for the trash heap, as some of it might be recyclable. Items like cardboard and many kinds of wrapping paper can be recycled, and recycling them can save some considerable space in your trash bin.
