Why You Need Oil Changes

Oil

As a car owner, it’s been drilled into your head from the very beginning: get your oil changed. For a long time, it was every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever came first. These days, in most cases, you can go quite a bit longer. But have you ever wondered why you need oil changes in the first place?

The Job Of Motor Oil

Before we answer the question of why you need to change it, let’s address why you have motor oil in the first place. You see, your engine is made up of many moving parts that create friction and wear. To combat this, you need to keep all those moving parts lubricated appropriately, and motor oil does that. The problem is, over time, deposits and other impurities get mixed into your oil and you need to change it.

How Often Should You Get Your Oil Changed?

How often should your vehicle’s oil be changed? There’s no simple answer to that question these days. But one thing’s for sure, 3,000 is not the coverall advice for everyone anymore. You see, there have been tremendous advances made in the way engines today are built. In fact, many modern engines can go for long periods of time without needing an oil change. You’ll want to consult your owner’s manual to see what your manufacturer recommends or ask an automotive technician to see what you should do. Many cars do not need an oil change except every 5,000 miles or even longer.
