Native American cultures are an beautiful part of our community here in Lebanon and throughout Tennessee, and each year, locals and visitors have the opportunity to come together for a tremendous intertribal celebration. This September, the WilCo Pow Wow will return to Lebanon for a weekend of music, dancing, arts, food, and fellowship, so mark your calendar for the 2023 WilCo Pow Wow!

Traditional Dance

There will be all kinds of amazing exhibitions and displays at the WilCo Pow Wow, but one of the most awe-inspiring events on the schedule is the demonstration of traditional dance styles. Members of various cultures and communities will come together to perform dances that stem from their histories, values, and experiences, and it is sure to be an eye-opening and enlightening showcase of art and athleticism.

Dance Styles

The transfixing sounds of the Jingle Dress evoke the sound of falling rain, while the vibrant colors of the Feather Dancers span numerous tribal communities, while the dancers themselves showcase incredible agility and stamina. The Straight Dance draws from the movements of hunters and warriors, with the toe touching down to the first eat, followed by the full footfall on the second beat. Because the Straight Dance evokes bravery, the dancer must move ever forward, never back in retreat. The Buckskin Dance is considered the oldest form of traditional women’s dance. The apparel may vary by region, but the motion of the dancers is generally smooth and measured as they sway their arms, trailing the fringes of their sleeves through the air.
